Workshop for the Joint Crediting Mechanism (JCM) in Bangladesh
-Workshop for understanding the JCM implementation under Article 6-

Department of Environment (DoE) on behalf of Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change (MoEFCC) and Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES) jointly organized a workshop for “Understanding the JCM implementation under Article 6” on 3rd February 2022. It was held online through zoom meeting due to COVID-19 pandemic situation. Mr. Md. Mizanul Hoque Chowdhury, Additional Secretary (Climate Change), Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC), Bangladesh and Co-chair of the JCM Joint Committee (Bangladesh side) graced the workshop as the Chief Guest. This workshop was chaired by Mr. Md. Humayun Kabir, Additional Director General, Department of Environment (DoE), Bangladesh.

Emission reductions from the JCM projects can be used for the international mitigation pledges. As rules and modalities for Article 6 mechanism has been finalized at COP26, DoE and IGES has taken this initiative to prepare for future JCM implementation.

Around 46 delegates from govt. agencies (BCIC, BSEC, Forest Department, BRTA, DTCA, BCCT, Planning Commission, Power Cell, SREDA, PKSF, DSCC, IDCOL, Titas), JCM Joint Committee, DoE, and IGES actively participated in this workshop. Information on the understanding of Article 6 in relation with the JCM was shared and discussed with them. DoE and IGES are hopeful that this initiative will accelerate the contribution of JCM to NDC implementation in future.

Workshop for the Joint Crediting Mechanism (JCM) in Bangladesh
-New opportunities under the collaboration between World Bank and the Ministry of the Environment, Japan-

Ministry of the Environment of Japan, World Bank Group, Department of Environment (DoE) on behalf of Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change (MoEFCC) and Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES) jointly organized this workshop on 18th March, 2021. It was held online through zoom meeting due to COVID-19 pandemic situation. Mr. Md. Mizanul Hoque Chowdhury, Additional Secretary (Climate Change) Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC), Bangladesh graced the workshop as the Chief Guest. And this workshop was chaired by Mr. Md. Humayun Kabir, Additional Director General, Department of Environment (DoE), Bangladesh.
This workshop was organized with a aim to collaborate with World Bank and IDCOL to find out new opportunities to promote JCM in Bangladesh. Ms. Sandhya Srinivasan, Climate Change Specialist joined the workshop on behalf of World Bank. JCM Joint committee members, 4 personnel from IDCOL, representatives from MoEFCC, DoE, MoEJ and IGES participated in this workshop. The main focus of the discussion was article 6 related activities in Bangladesh and the scopes for collaborating JCM with article 6.

Training Workshop on Writing Proposals for Joint Crediting Mechanism

 

The Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES), Japan on behalf of the Ministry of the Environment, Japan (MOEJ) and Department of Environment (DoE) on behalf of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) Bangladesh jointly organized “Training Workshop on Writing Proposals for Joint Crediting Mechanism” on 19th February 2020 Wednesday at the Conference room of Department of Environment.

 

   

 

 

Representatives from different Japanese agencies (OECC, IGES) facilitated the training session of the workshop on JCM project development processes and application. They also conducted one to one discussion session with each Bangladeshi companies to assist them on developing JCM projects. Around 78 personnel from private companies, business associations, and government officials attended the workshop.
The whole workshop was designed in three (3) sessions-

  3. Consultation Session

Mr. Ziaul Hasan ndc, Secretary, Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change graced the workshop as the Chief Guest and Dr. A.K.M. Rafique Ahammed, Director General, DoE chaired the workshop. Mr. Khondkar Morshed Millat, Sustainable Finance Department, Bangladesh Bank was also attended the workshop as special guest.

Workshop to Facilitate Matchmaking for Joint Crediting Mechanism (JCM) in Bangladesh

The Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES), Japan on behalf of the Ministry of the Environment, Japan (MOEJ) and Department of Environment (DoE) on behalf of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) Bangladesh jointly organized “Workshop to Facilitate Matchmaking for Joint Crediting Mechanism (JCM) in Bangladesh” on 15th October 2019 Tuesday at Crystal Ballroom of the Hotel InterContinental Dhaka.

Representatives from different Japanese companies (Sharp & Mayekawa) and agencies (OECC, GEC, IGES) facilitated the workshop to disseminate information on updates of JCM, JCM project development processes and application. Besides these, JCM Financing Programme, JCM Global Match, and Contribution to SDGs by the JCM in Bangladesh were also discussed in the technical session of the workshop. The main focus of the workshop was the matchmaking session where entrepreneurs of Bangladesh got the privilege of one to one interaction with the Japanese entities. In this session, entrepreneurs had the opportunity to discuss on the JCM processes, its financial schemes, and low carbon technology projects in detail. Around 85 personnel from private companies, business associations, government officials dealing in areas of energy, transport, industries participated in and contributed to the workshop.

 Capacity Building/Matchmaking Workshop on Joint Crediting Mechanism (JCM)

The Department of Environment (DoE), Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF), Bangladesh and the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES), Japan and Ministry of the Environment, Japan (MOEJ) jointly organized a multi-stakeholders Capacity Building/Matchmaking Workshop on Joint Crediting Mechanism (JCM) on 21 March 2017 at the Conference Hall, Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI), Motijheel, Dhaka.

  

The workshop disseminated information on JCM and diffusion of low carbon technologies in Bangladesh. The main focus was promoting the involvement of the private entrepreneurs in this low carbon development initiative. More than 85 personnel from business companies and business associations dealing in areas of energy, transport, industries and the like participated in and contributed to the workshop. DoE delivered a presentation on JCM update in Bangladesh while IGES gave a series of presentations including JCM opportunities for private sectors in Bangladesh, JCM financing schemes and JCM online matchmaking platforms. In the open discussion session, the main talked about topic was online matchmaking platform and its significance in promotion of JCM in Bangladesh.
Mr. Istiaque Ahmad, Secretary in Charge, Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF), Bangladesh graced the workshop as the Chief Guest while Mr. Md. Raisul Alam Mondal, Director General, Department of Environment, Bangladesh presided over the occasion. Mr. Md. The workshop disseminates information on JCM and diffusion of low carbon technologies in Bangladesh. The main focus was matchmaking event between Bangladeshi and Japanese entrepreneurs. More than 55 personnel of business companies and business associations dealing in areas of energy, transport, industries and the like participated in and contributed to the workshop. IGES gave a series of presentations including decision of market mechanism in COP21, update on JCM, introduction to JCM model projects under implementation in Bangladesh, introduction to PV-diesel hybrid system at Fastening Manufacturing Plant, understanding JCM structure, procedure and eligibility criteria. Apart from the above, DoE offers a presentation on update of JCM in Bangladesh.

The First Capacity Building Workshop on Bilateral Offset Credit Mechanism (BOCM)/ Joint Crediting Mechanism (JCM) for Private Sectors

The Department of Environment (DoE), Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF), Bangladesh and the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES), Japan jointly organizes the first Capacity Building Workshop on Bilateral Offset Credit Mechanism (BOCM)/ Joint Crediting Mechanism (JCM) for Private Sectors on 17 September 2015 in CIRDAP International Conference Center, Dhaka with active participation of JCM Joint committee members (both Bangladesh side and Japan side), members of JCM Bangladesh secretariat, Japanese and Bangladeshi private entrepreneurs and media people.

  

 

A total of 60 personnel participated in and contributed to the workshop. IGES made a series of presentations including current status of BOCM/JCM and financial options, energy saving for air conditioning and factory cooling by high efficiency centrifugal chiller, and energy saving by utilizing lithium‐ion batteries at base transceiver stations in unstable grid areas efficient energy storage system for base transceiver station (BTS). Apart from the above, DoE offered a presentation on update of JCM in Bangladesh. Department of Mechanical Engineering, Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) made a presentation on technology needs and potentialities of BOCM/JCM in textile, garments and steel sectors of Bangladesh. Finally, Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) did a presentation on solid waste management.

The workshop was an important step towards capacity building on BOCM process for Joint Committee members, members of BOCM Bangladesh Secretariat, relevant ministries and agencies, and the private sector. A total of 22 participants from BOCM Joint Committee (Bangladesh side), scientists, researchers, and BOCM Bangladesh Secretariat members with expertise in the areas of climate change mitigation, energy, transport, industries and the like took part in the workshop.
